Chapter 6

"Jessie, can you come over. Bring Theo," Cheryl's voice was filled with frustration and Jessie rubbed the sleep out of her eyes trying to keep up.

"Wait, what happened?"

"My office. It happened again. I know you think I'm crazy but just come over and have Theo check on the camera feed. Surely we'll see something."

"Give me half an hour?" Jessie looked at the clock on the bed-stand. It was only six in the morning, but she could hear Theo in the shower and the Mutt outside the door.

"Okay, but bring me a very sweet, very strong coffee. I'm starting to get really annoyed. If this is some student trying to find my answer key, he's out of luck. I'm not dumb enough to leave those here."

The phone clicked, and Jessie pulled it away looking at the blank screen. Her head spun slightly as she hopped from the big bed, grabbing a clean outfit and letting the dog in. "What do you want? You can let yourself out the doggie door you know."

Muttley sat, tipping his head to one side, his long ears flopping and his white ruff almost glowing in the early light of dawn.

"Jessie, are you up?" Theo stepped out of the bathroom a towel wrapped around his narrow hips as he rubbed his shaggy hair dry with another one. "What's up?" he blinked as she slipped into a skirt and sandals.

"Cher just called, she's really upset this time. Someone's been in her office again." She leaned in, kissing him on the lips. "I'm getting coffee started, get dressed and let's go."

"Mutt coming?"

The dog's bark and quick shuffle to standing, indicated he was ready, and Jessie laughed. "I guess so. Now get dressed," She slapped his firm hip, then hurried down the stairs.

By the time they left the house, three large travel mugs sat between them in the console of the SUV. "Is she really going to drink that?" Theo asked, glancing at the pink mug. "It's more like dessert than coffee."

"She'll drink it," Jessie laughed. "Cheryl loves my pumpkin spice, caramel apple, iced latte."

"I'd think she'd be watching her calorie intake with a wedding a few months away." Theo laughed, yelping when she gave him a swat on the shoulder. "Hey, don't hit the driver," he chuckled. "Seriously, is Cheryl this stressed?"

"She seems to be." Jessie sighed. "Oh, I should let Paul know." She turned her attention to her phone. A squeal of tires, and a hard jerk to the left made her scream, as Theo dodged around a car that missed a stop sign.

"You okay?" he asked, his eyes focused and hands firmly set on the wheel as he turned down a narrow side street.

"That was close," Jessie blew out a breath, her heart pounding. "Muttley," she turned looking at the dog who was climbing back up onto the seat. "Poor boy," The big dog huffed in disgust, gave a soft woof and rested his chin on his paws once more. "Oh no!"

"What!" Theo's voice held a hint of panic.
